As states work to deliver affordable, reliable energy, they are increasingly seeking to streamline the processes needed to deliver projects at scale. New Network: State Siting Officials Collaborative We are pleased to announce the launch of The State Siting Officials Collaborative, with our partners at Great Plains Institute and the Conveners Network. This collaboration will bring together state officials from more than 20 states to navigate challenges with large-scale clean energy siting and permitting. Participants will share strategies and troubleshoot barriers together in at least three virtual sessions this year. If you or your colleagues are interested in participating, please contact sandie@s2strategies.org
For additional state siting resources check out RMI’s State Permitting Power Tool. This tool matches your specific challenges with tailored state-level policy reforms and practical solutions.

Streamlining Geothermal Deployment

Geothermal energy offers firm, baseload clean power. It’s all the more attractive because federal tax credits remain available until 2032. From Arizona, where the Governor’s Energy Promise Taskforce prioritizes geothermal, to Pennsylvania, which just secured $14M for an Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) demonstration project, we see broad political and geographic interest in the technology.  But permitting complexity and fragmented regulatory authority remain key barriers. We’ve developed recommendations for Streamlining State Geothermal Permitting and Regulatory Processes to reduce duplication and increase clarity for both state agency staff and developers so that projects can get started sooner.

Accelerating Deployment with Surplus Interconnection

Is your state taking advantage of surplus interconnection service (SIS)?  SIS allows new energy resources to short-cut the interconnection queue by using existing grid capacity and existing power plant footprints instead of building new transmission and greenfield sites.

  • Indiana and Virginia recently passed new laws to optimize their states’ existing grid infrastructure through the use of SIS.

  • Explore this dashboard from GridLab and UC-Berkley to understand the surplus interconnection potential in your state.

  • Along with RMI, we’ve produced a memo recommending state-level actions to take advantage of surplus interconnection service in the PJM territory.

We’re working with partners who are ready, willing and able to assist states in every region in seizing this opportunity. If that’s you, please reach out!
